Spain won 16 major trophies in five years. Is any nation even close?

Sixteen major trophies. Five years. That is the number the BBC landed on when they totted up Spain’s haul across club and international women’s football since 2021.

At club level, Barcelona have four Champions League titles, three Liga F titles, and three Copas de la Reina. Internationally, Spain have a World Cup, a Nations League, and four youth tournament wins.

That is not a purple patch. That is a system.

The trophy count, broken down

The 16 break into two groups. Ten for Barcelona. Six for Spain.

Barcelona’s four UWCL titles came in 2021, 2023, 2024 and 2025. They beat Chelsea, Wolfsburg, Lyon and Lyon again, four different finals, four different opponents, four wins. They have appeared in five of the last six UWCL finals. Lyon, the previous dynasty, won eight titles across 12 years but their last was in 2022. Barcelona have not just caught up. They have taken over.

Spain’s World Cup win in 2023 was the moment the system delivered on the biggest stage. They beat England 1-0 in Sydney. Olga Carmona scored. Jorge Vilda was already a deeply divisive figure inside the squad, and the fallout from that tournament reshaped the federation. But the football was the football: a team playing the Barcelona way, with Barcelona players in almost every position, and winning a World Cup doing it.

The Nations League followed in 2024. Spain beat France 2-0 in the final. At that point they had won every major international trophy available.

What makes the system work

The simple answer is Barcelona. Eleven of Spain’s 2023 World Cup final starting lineup played for Barcelona at the time. The club’s La Masia academy and its commitment to a defined playing style, possession, high press, technical fluency, produce players who slot into the national team without an adjustment period.

Aitana Bonmati won the Ballon d’Or in 2023 and 2024. Alexia Putellas won it in 2021 and 2022. Four Ballons d’Or in four years, all to Barcelona midfielders, all to Spanish internationals. That is not a coincidence. That is a production line.

The youth system reinforces it. Spain have won four youth tournaments in this stretch, meaning the pipeline from under-17 to senior international is producing at every level. England won the Euros in 2022 and reached the World Cup final. The United States have four World Cups historically. Germany have two World Cups and eight Euros. But nobody has matched Spain’s combined club and country output over this five-year window.

The historical footnote that matters

Spain became only the second nation after Germany to have won both a men’s and a women’s World Cup. Spain’s men won in 2010. The women won in 2023. Germany’s men have four titles spanning 1954 to 2014, their women won in 2003 and 2007.

That club is not getting bigger quickly. Brazil have five men’s World Cups but their women have never won one. England’s men won in 1966, their women reached the final in 2023 but lost to Spain. France’s men won in 1998 and 2018, their women have never won. The United States have four women’s World Cups but their men have never reached a final.

Two nations. That is the entire list. Spain are on it.

How long can this last

The question is not whether Spain are dominant now. The question is whether anyone can catch up while Barcelona’s academy and the national team’s shared philosophy remain in place.

England have the WSL’s financial muscle and a Euro 2022 title. The United States have the deepest talent pool in the world. France have Lyon’s infrastructure and PSG’s money. Germany remain Germany, they will always be there.

But 16 trophies in five years is not a lead. It is a statement. The chasing pack are not catching a team. They are catching a system.
