Beth Mead's 385 days: the ACL injury that cost her a home World Cup

A serious knee injury in November 2022 kept Beth Mead out of the entire 2023 World Cup. Her route back to England duty, checked against the record.

Beth Mead’s best year and her worst injury sit a month apart on the calendar, not years. That is easy to miss if you only remember the trophy and the medal, and skip past what happened in between.

The peak

Mead finished Euro 2022 as both top scorer and player of the tournament, as England won the competition for the first time, beating Germany 2-1 at Wembley. Four months later, in December, she became the first female footballer to win BBC Sports Personality of the Year.

The injury that undid the timing

The gap between those two moments contains the part of the story the trophy doesn’t show. On 19 November 2022, playing for Arsenal against Manchester United, Mead ruptured her ACL. By the time she collected the BBC award in December, she was already working through recovery from an injury serious enough to end her season on the spot.

The 2023 World Cup was less than eight months away. Mead did not make it. She missed the tournament entirely, watching England reach the final without her.

The return

Mead came back to competitive football on 15 October 2023, coming on as a substitute for Arsenal against Aston Villa. It was not a quiet return: she assisted Alessia Russo’s last-minute winner on her first appearance back. Six weeks later, on 1 December, she returned to the England squad too, coming off the bench at half-time against the Netherlands with England 2-0 down, and helping them win 3-2.

The comeback kept building. In the Euro 2025 semi-final against Italy, on 22 July 2025, Mead won the extra-time penalty that took England into the final, fouled by Emma Severini in a moment VAR reviewed before confirming; Chloe Kelly converted the rebound after her first effort was saved. Five days later, England beat Spain on penalties to win the tournament, Mead’s second European title.

In June 2026, Mead left Arsenal for Manchester City on a three-year deal, closing one chapter of a career that had already survived the injury nobody plans for at the exact moment everything else was going right.
